ABSTRACT

Distillery spent wash is a potential source of water pollution as it contains high content of organic & volatile matter. The characteristics of distillery spent wash depend on the quality of the feed stocks and the various aspects of the ethanol production process. The spent wash is generally dark brown liquid with an un- bearable odor. It is acidic in nature with high biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and high concentration of mineral salts. The experiments with varying parameters is carried out, and the optimum values of voltage, distance between electrode, pH with three hours of time electrolysis, for every hour the sample is collected and COD, colour, BOD, TDS, pH and EC are conducted. The optimum voltage was found 15vols, distance was 2cm and pH was 7.2 was observed. The efficiency found for optimum parameters are 78% COD, 95%Colour, 81%TDS, 91% BOD was observed. The photocatalytic process followed by Electrocoagulation is carried out, and also for the raw distillery is carried out, the dosage of 0.1, 0.4, 0.8grams of titanium di oxide is used. The results were observed good for 0.8grams. COD was removed for raw distillery 7% and for electrocoagulated treated sample 25%, colour removed for raw distillery 11.44% and for electrocoagulated sample 76%, BOD observed for raw distillery 6% and for electrocoagulated sample 18%, TDS for raw distillery 12% and for electrocoagulated sample 18% was observed.
