Duplex stainless steels were originally developed for the manufacture of pumps and impellers housing in the
fertilizer industry. However, the growing demand for casting components of these materials has led to the application of
a largely developed for this forming process technology. After having undergone heat treatment solution treatment, these
materials become thermodynamically metastable systems, as the concentration of solid solution of solute atoms is so high
that they become saturated, causing them to look for a free energy state lower when exposed to different temperatures.
These systems achieve a stable thermodynamic state by the precipitation of different intermetallic phases, depending on
the temperatures to which they are exposed. Thermal energy is the catalyst to "overcome" the energy barrier separating
the metastable and stable phases. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of various heat treatment
temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of stainless steel and duplex.
