Abstract

This paper describe the development of Shunt active power filters.Active filters are widely employed in distribution system to
reduce the harmonics produced by non-linear loads result in voltage distortion and leads to various power quality problems. In
this work the simulation study of the instantaneous active and reactive power theory,or the so called “p-q Theory”.The principle
operation of the SAPF is the generation of the appropriate current harmonics required by the non-linear load.for the reference
current generation,One of the best know and effective techniques is “The instantaneous active and reactive power theory”or “p-q
theory”. p-q theory applied on shunt active power filter capable of reducing the total harmonic distortion is presented. The
instantaneous p-q theory is used for calculating the compensating current. The advantage of p-q control is that it is based on set of
instantaneous power defined in the time domain. The total Harmonic distortion,Individual harmonic content with respect to % of
fundamental in supply current source voltage have been analyzed.Various simulation results are presented. The THD of the
source current after compensation is well below 5%, the harmonic limit imposed by the IEEE-519 standard.
