Abstract

Surface finish is an important quality characteristic of any manufactured part. Machining process is often
employed to improve the surface finish. In this study, different experiments of turning operation will be performed on
mild steel samples by HSS SPCT using different values of cutting parameters like cutting speed, depth of cut and feed
rate using design of experiments on CNC lathe. Eighteen such experiments will be performed and the surface finish data
will be recorded as per L18 orthogonal array. This data will be used to calculate the grey relational coefficients and then
the grey relational grade which are then used to calculate S/N ratios. The values of S/N ratios are used predict the
optimal parameters for turning operation. Confirmation tests will be used to confirm the predicted results.
